Food doesn't kill, People kill!
(From the November 8th edition of the Las Vegas Penny Press)
This week's shocking revelation that the Atkins Diet was bad for you wasn't shocking at all to me. Having been taken through a life changing transformation of eating right, I knew that the Atkins numbers just didn't work.
The ideas that are being thrown out by pop culture of what is good and what is bad is absolutely ludicrous.
Carbs are bad, fat is bad, protein is bad. Phooey. What's left?
Fish and chicken are excellent for you. Deep fried ANYTHING is not. No matter what the hucksters like to say.
When you heat cooking oil (which is a FAT, by the way) to the temperature necessary to deep fry that food, you have made it indigestible to the body and destroyed any usefulness that it might have.
Your body does need fats in a clean, balanced ratio. My friend, the late Don Lemmon, pointed it out best. He showed me how to live a better life and how to be a healthier me.
I haven't been as good as I should have been since his death simply because it wasn't fair. A good man killed at such a young age, with a loving wife, a beautiful daughter, and a son on the way.
I returned to a lot of my old habits, comfort eating, snacking on candy and cakes like there was no tomorrow.
But I still tried to watch what I ate. I stay away from fried foods and the infamous High Fructose Corn Syrup, and the results have been pretty good. My last set of labs come up very clean, and with a change of scenery and a new attitude I should be able to get on track and head back to the lower end of the 200's instead of the higher ends.
Stress and depression will do that to you...
Ultimately, it's not about what diet you're on or what the Gubmint makes legal or illegal.
There's only one person responsible for your health.
You.
The old saying You are What You Eat is so very true. Eating pre-packaged junk with tons of artificial flavoring and preservatives is not going to make you healthy. Whole foods the way nature made them with reasonable seasonings and in the right proportions is the only way to get and stay healthy.
It worked for me and a lot of people.
It will work again when I get my head on straight.
Oh, speaking of my least favorite sweetener, a shout out to the good folks at Anderson Dairy. In a world where so many food producers have succumbed to the pressure to replace sugar with the much cheaper (and much less healthy)I High Fructose Corn Syrup, they continue to sweeten their egg nog with Sugar! And I find it usually priced less than the so-called "premium" brands.
I thank you, and my wife and children thank you.
Another recall from Mattel, this one with a twist.
This time, 155-thousand toys recalled due to choking hazards were made in ... Mexico?
I think I have to join Pat Choate in vowing to never buy any products from Mattel or Fisher-Price (A Mattel subsidiary) again.
I know the substandard products from China are expected, but I would think that with obvious design defects such as this being made so close to home, Mattel would know better! Perhaps they just don't care.
The Bush administration's talk about tightening import and food safety standards is just that: talk.
The fact of the matter is that the administration has cut inspection dollars from the FDA for imports, so anything added back just brings them back to the poor level they had before the cuts!
The fact is, less than one-half of one percent of imports from China and other nations are being inspected. We used to inspect more until the Bush Administration closed seven of the FDA's regional laboratories for "cost savings".
Give me a break.
The Bush Administration doesn't like the 2007 Farm Bill that just came out of the Senate Agricultural Committee for all sorts of reasons. They especially dislike the firming up of the mandatory Country of Origin Labeling, or COOL.
Amazingly, a large number of producer groups are against it as well.
Heck if I know why, particularly since this last round of Toxic Chinese junk!
I honestly believe if the American people simply paid attention to what they put in their mouths and where it came from, our nation would be in a whole lot better physical and economic health.
